BG 50-69 in ALERT patient:

1. Give one of the following:

a) 4 oz OJ (apple juice for ESRD)

b) 8 oz milk

c) 1 tube glucose gel

d) 3 glucose tabs

2. Repeat BG in 15 min

3. If still BG <70, repeat #1-2

 

BG<50 in ALERT patient

 

1.Give one of the following:

a) 8 oz OJ (apple juice for ESRD)

b) 16 oz milk

c) 2 tubes glucose gel

d) 6 glucose tabs

2. Repeat BG in 15 min

3. If still BG <70, repeat #1-2

 

BG <70 in patient with ALTERED MS

1.If IV access:

     Give: 50 ml D50 IV (1 amp) and start IV D5W at 100 ml/hr

If no IV access:

      a) 1mg glucagon IM

      b) Establish IV access and start IV D5W at 100 ml/hr

2. Repeat BG in 15 min and monitor MS
